at waited for the dust of Sebastian’s departure to settle before she stepped back into the sunlight. The dapple-gray mare followed with a placid stride, her head hanging even with Cat’s knee. “Poor old girl.” Cat crooned and patted the skinny neck. “We’ll get you sorted out.”

Tobias met her at the paddock and swung the gate open. “Trail ride coming in Monday morning. They want the mountain pass experience.”

Her favorite trip. She nodded to show she heard and kept pace with the mare. Together they walked the perimeter so the mare could acclimate to her new surroundings. Her thoughts ran circles in time with each step. Had Sebastian acclimated to his return or was he still lost in the past?

Did he struggle the way the mare did? With believing that someone out there still cared? The choice had to be his. He could continue hanging his head and plodding along, never looking at what might be. Or he could look around and accept that Cat had never stopped believing.

She’d never stopped hoping he might come back. After loving him all this time, it would be easy to accept his feelings of obligation as something more profound. But she deserved better. She needed his whole heart, free of Joey’s promise, or nothing at all.

“I’m heading into town for the festival. You coming?” Tobias waited near the gate, one booted foot propped on the lower rail. He grinned at her frown. “You told me to remind you that you have to go.”

“Go ahead. I’ll be right behind you.”

“Right.” Tobias grinned and chuckled, his head wagging side to side. “See you Monday.”

Her snort matched the mare’s, the two of them staring at Tobias’ retreating back. “Guess he doesn’t believe me. I’ll have to prove him wrong, won’t I?” She unclipped the lead rope and stepped back. “I can do this. I can see Sebastian and not fall apart. The whole town will be there. I probably won’t see him at all.”

She jerked her head and glared at the mare’s pitiful frame. “I should stay here with you though. You need me.”

The mare butted her head into Cat’s stomach as though to say, “go on”.

“Fine.” She tapped the lead against her leg and shifted from foot to foot. “I’ll go. But only for a little while.”

A snort answered, which Cat took as condescension, but she pushed herself into the house to change clothes and attempt something more than a ponytail with her hair. Half an hour later, wearing a sunshine yellow sundress and her hair twisted into a messy French braid that had nothing to do with impressing Sebastian and everything to do with feeling good in her own skin, Cat slid behind the wheel and headed to town.

Redemption Bluff loved their shindigs. From the fourth of July parades to turning the entire town into a wonderland for Christmas, they never passed up a chance to show off the small town charm Cat loved.

Still a mile from the courtyard, Cat pulled into an empty parking spot.
